With busy roads and the popularity of horse-riding, South West Riders was formed in 2001 to raise the profile of horse-riding and to inform & influence Devon County Council (DCC) policy. This includes (not exclusively) the multi-use of cycle ways, the fragmented network of bridleways, and the lack of safe crossing points on busy roads. To this end, we have lobbied local MPs and Ministers, DCC and other agencies such as the Forestry Commission.
We have a good working relationship with DCC Public Rights of Way and Highways Departments and regularly have meetings to assist in the provision of recreational routes. We have agreed with DCC a protocol for new routes and structures. This will also be applied retrospectively to existing routes.
We have a large and active membership but we need many more if we are to achieve our aim “to make riding more fun and safer for everybody”. If you would like to join, then please visit our Membership page.
